Tuesday is Harry Potter Club day so I’m going to post some magical-themed crafts- how to make a magical mug pen holder. Warnings before you begin: this is MESSY so make sure you’ve got an adult’s permission (and help if needed) and space to make it. Then you will need- an old mug that you don’t mind turning into a pen holder, tissue paper/old magazines/anything can cut up and collage (tissue paper works best for this one), PVA glue, an old paintbrush for spreading the glue and sequins or glitter glue to decorate.
Make sure you’re allowed to use the mug before you start!! I’m using an old Homeland mug that has been through the dishwasher so many times in the 8 years I’ve had it that you can hardly see the image on it. Then clear a space to work- I usually put down old plastic bags to make things on but check with an adult before you start. Then cut up the tissue paper, pour some glue into a suitable container and you’re ready to go!
Using the paintbrush, spread some glue onto the mug. Put some tissue paper over it then carefully spread more glue over the tissue paper. Don’t worry if it rips, you can always layer more tissue paper on top. Then keep spreading glue and layering tissue paper until the whole mug is covered. You can do as many layers as you want!
The hardest bit is the handle and there’s no one way to do it. I usually use my fingers to wrap the tissue round the handle and press it into place which means very messy hands but PVA glue washes off easily! Again, don’t worry if it tears; just add more tissue paper!
Then you should be left with a totally covered mug. Leave it to dry for a couple of hours before starting to decorate it. I used star-shaped sequins which I stuck on with more PVA glue and some glitter glue to draw a lightning shape. But it’s totally up to you- use your imagination to create whatever design you want! Then leave it to dry again and you’re finished- a magical mug pen holder ✨
